Walking is something most of us do without giving it much thought.
We walk to the mailbox, through the grocery store, across a parking lot, around the house, or while traveling. But the ability to walk comfortably and confidently depends on much more than simply putting one foot in front of the other.
Researchers have studied walking speed, also called gait speed, as one way of assessing physical function in older adults.
Why?
Because walking brings together many different systems at once. Your muscles must produce force. Your nervous system coordinates movement. Your balance helps keep you steady. Your joints allow you to move, while your heart and lungs support the activity.
Your normal walking pace can therefore provide useful information about how well your body is functioning as a whole.
Walking Is More Complicated Than It Looks
Take a few steps across the room and your body immediately begins coordinating a long list of tasks.
Muscles in your hips and legs produce force. Your feet interact with the ground. Your nervous system controls the timing of your movements. Your balance system makes constant adjustments, while your eyes help you navigate your surroundings.
And all of this happens automatically.

Why Researchers Pay Attention to Walking Speed
Researchers have found associations between walking speed and a variety of health and functional outcomes as people age.
Slower gait speed has been associated with areas including mobility limitations, falls, disability, cognitive health, cardiovascular health, hospitalization, and mortality.
But this research needs to be interpreted carefully.
A slower walking pace doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, nor does walking faster automatically make someone healthier.
Everyone has a natural pace, and many factors can affect it.
What may be particularly useful is noticing changes from your own normal.
If someone who previously walked comfortably begins moving more slowly, tiring more easily, or having difficulty keeping up with everyday activities, that change may be worth investigating.
Your Legs Play a Big Role
Every step requires your lower-body muscles to produce and control force.
Your hips, thighs, calves, and other supporting muscles help move you forward, stabilize your body, and prepare you for the next step.
Now consider what happens if those muscles gradually become weaker.
An activity that once required only a small portion of your available strength may begin requiring much more of it.
It’s similar to having a physical reserve.
When you have plenty of strength available, everyday tasks may leave you with capacity to spare. When your strength reserve becomes smaller, the same tasks can begin feeling more demanding.
That’s why maintaining lower-body strength can be important for much more than performing exercises.
It’s strength you can use in everyday life.
New Research Connects Strength Training and Walking Function
A large 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis took a closer look at how resistance training affects gait and physical function in older adults.
The researchers analyzed 92 studies involving nearly 6,000 participants, with an average age of approximately 73.
Compared with inactive control groups, resistance training produced large improvements in strength and improvements in several measures related to physical function, including:
- Walking speed
- Walking distance
- Sit-to-stand performance
- Timed Up and Go performance
- Stair climbing
The researchers also examined different program characteristics. Lower-body exercises such as the leg press were associated with improvements in several gait-related outcomes.
That doesn’t mean resistance training is a cure-all for walking difficulties. Walking ability can be affected by many different factors.
What the research does reinforce is the connection between maintaining muscular strength and maintaining physical function.
Walking More and Getting Stronger Aren’t the Same Thing
Walking is excellent physical activity.
But walking and strength training don’t ask your muscles to do exactly the same job.
During a walk, your muscles repeatedly produce the amount of force necessary to move your body.
During resistance training, muscles are intentionally challenged against greater resistance. That challenge gives them a stimulus to adapt.
This distinction becomes particularly important as we get older.
Walking regularly can help you continue practicing the activity of walking.
Strength training can help you work on the muscular capacity that contributes to performing that activity.
Rather than choosing between the two, they can play complementary roles.
Walking uses your strength. Resistance training helps you develop and maintain it.
It’s Not About Walking as Fast as Possible
Learning that walking speed is associated with health shouldn’t turn your daily walk into a race.
The goal isn’t to force yourself to walk faster.
If someone’s walking pace has changed, the more important question is why.
Muscle weakness is one possibility, but so are joint discomfort, balance problems, neurological conditions, cardiovascular limitations, medications, vision changes, fatigue, and many other factors.
That’s why gait speed is better viewed as useful information rather than a score.
Instead of asking whether you’re faster than someone else, consider whether you’re maintaining the ability to move comfortably, safely, and confidently at a pace that works for you.
Pay Attention to Changes in Everyday Movement
You don’t need special equipment to notice changes in your physical abilities.
Daily life provides plenty of clues.
Perhaps you find yourself using the handrail more often on stairs.
Maybe getting out of a low chair requires more effort.
You might notice you’re walking more cautiously across uneven ground or taking longer to move through a large store.
Other changes could include:
- Feeling more tired after walking
- Having difficulty keeping pace with family or friends
- Hesitating before stepping onto a curb
- Avoiding stairs when possible
- Feeling less steady while walking
- Taking longer to complete familiar activities
A single difficult day doesn’t necessarily mean anything significant.
But consistent changes in your usual physical function are worth paying attention to and, when appropriate, discussing with your healthcare provider.
